Can I personalize a funeral?

There is no right or wrong way to celebrate somebody’s life. At Miller's we believe it is important to openly acknowledge a loss, to celebrate and honor your loved one and our professional planners are leaders in working with and creating personalized services of any selection.

Do we need to have an obituary notice and what is included in one?

Miller's recommends an obituary notice that’s either placed in a local newspaper, or placed online.  A paid obituary provides the information about the services selected.  Miller's offers an online obituary or memorial website at no charge providing a family the opportunity to create a detailed and heartfelt tribute to your loved one. 

Who are funeral directors and what do they do?

At Miller's our licensed funeral directors are loss, remembrance and life celebration experts.  Our expert planners will complete all necessary paperwork, make arrangements for the transportation of your loved one into our care, and following a detailed meeting to discuss the family's thoughts, wishes and needs place into action these selections.

What happens if the death occurs in the middle of the night or on the weekend?

What if a death occurs away from my home town?

With over 126 years of family ownership and operation we are experts in arranging for services when a death occurs away from home. We may facilitate the return of your loved one to Rochester, assist in having a cremation facilitated where they passed and have the cremated remains returned to Rochester and on the simplest level we are here to be your guide and resource. 

What is embalming and what purpose does it serve?

Embalming slows down the natural processes of the body following death. It allows us to provide a better memory picture of your loved one and allows added time to the family of the deceased to arrange a service.

Do I need to have an embalming?

No.  In fact some religions forbid embalming, however, some service selections may encourage embalming,

Why are funerals so expensive?

The cost of a funeral goes beyond merchandise such as caskets and is generally a compilation of the services a family selects. A funeral director makes the necessary arrangements for the selected services, compiles, procures for signature and files with appropriate authority forms, and makes arrangements between other parties involves [doctors, lawyers, insurance companies, newspapers, churches, cemeteries, crematories, bagpiper, motorcycle escort for procession...]. Funeral homes and the professionals they employ are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the morning.  This availability combined with daily expenses of operating a funeral home adds up to business with multiple fixed expenditures. At Miller's we developed a pricing structure allowing us to provide the compassionate care a family in need deserves, beautiful facilities, experienced expert licensed funeral directors and support staff.
