June 12, 1950 – March 29, 2023
John passed away peacefully on March 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family under Hospice care in the comfort of his home. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather.
John was born on June 12, 1950 in Gardners, Pennsylvania. He was the first born son to Ukrainian immigrants, and as such took on tremendous responsibility. He set a fantastic example for his five younger siblings through his academic and professional accomplishments. He grew up in Rome, NY before moving to Rochester, NY in 1981 with his wife Mary Lou (Stirpe) Kerwawycz to advance his career and raise a family of his own.
John had a brilliant mind and a passion for learning and teaching others. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physics and went on to earn a PhD in Materials Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, followed by an additional Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. He worked for many years at Xerox as an accomplished scientist and engineer.
John was a devout Christian and was passionate about his faith. He had a gift for teaching others and throughout his life freely offered his knowledge, time and love to his family and friends. He found the good in everyone. John truly enriched the lives of those around him and never lost his ability or desire to help. He enjoyed researching, working with his hands, and striving for precision. He loved his daughters and grandchildren deeply. In recent years his grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy.
John is predeceased by his parents Petro and Matrona Kerwawycz and infant brother, Robert Kerwawycz. Survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 48 years, Mary Lou (Stirpe) Kerwawycz, daughters Jamie Babcock and her fiancé Jeff, Kristin Stoll, and Lauren Groth and her husband Cuyler, grandchildren Connor, Julie, Luke, and Weston, and siblings Michael Kerwawycz and his wife Cheryl, Jennie Chmielewski, Martha Sue Pascucci, Helen Sarandrea, Patricia Stewart and her husband John, brother in law John Stirpe and his wife Lorraine, special loving sister in law Carol and her Husband Fred Hanba, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
John was loved and appreciated during his time on earth. He will be spoken of often and forever remembered.
A private family Celebration of Life will take place. No public services will be held.
