Hugh J. “Hugo” Mater of Macedon, NY passed away on April 3, 2023 at age 77.
Hugh was born in Rochester to Marion and F. Eugene Mater. He grew up in Rochester and later joined the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam War.
Hugh graduated from SUNY Oswego and worked as a resource agent for the NYS OPWDD where was known for the help and guidance he shared with other professionals in the field.
Hugh was passionate about music and enjoyed playing acoustic guitar in several bands over the years. He also served on the board of the Geneva Theater Guild.
Hugh loved reading, studying military history, and playing tabletop games. He also loved sharing a meal and conversation with friends and family. If you knew and will miss Hugh, his family encourages you to gather with friends and family to enjoy some food and laughs in his memory.
Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen “Kathy” Mater; parents, F. Eugene and Marion Mater; brother, James Mater; son-in-law, Anthony Cavagnaro; granddaughter, Barbara Ann White; and nephew Matthew Melich. He is survived by his former wife, Barbara (Sherman) Mater and their children, Jan (Jason) Milliman, Neil Mater, Richard Mater; step-children, Dave (Julie) Young, and Laura (Dave) George; grandchildren, Calvin Cavagnaro, Stephanie & Michael Mater, Ben, R.J., and Nadine Young, Sarah George; sisters, Mary Melich and Elizabeth Mater; sister-in-law Nancy Mater; nephews including Martin Melich; nieces; exchange students, Peter & Daniel Lucas, Brian Shrestha; and a large loving community of friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on April 22 at 11:00 AM at First Unitarian Church of Rochester, 220 S. Winton Rd, Rochester, NY 14610. Reception and acoustic jam to follow. Please bring your instrument to join in. Hawaiian shirts welcome.
The service will also be live-streamed on Zoom at: http://www.zoom.us/my/rochesterunitarian
Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to WXXI, P.O. Box 20570
