Tom E. Roat: 4/14/1951 – 5/24/2023
Thomas Edward Roat passed away peacefully at home on May 24th at the age of 72. He is predeceased by his parents Claude and Marjorie Roat, brother Jeff and niece Morgan Taylor. He is survived by his wife Mary; Children Caitlin (Jason Whitford) and Brian (Liz Dona). Step Children: Polly (JD) Williamson, Jessica Howell, Robert Howell & Sammie (Lenny Draiocht) Howell. Grandchildren Maddie & Layla Whitford, River Lenweaver, Braxton, Aaron, Braden, & Reagan Williamson , Teddy & Hurley Draiocht. Sisters: Judy (Mike) Donnolly & Chris (Dan) Taylor and brother Andy. Father-in-Law Buzz Abel. Many other family and friends.
Tom was a kind and loving Christian man whose faith developed largely through his participation in Young Life and time spent working in a Christian bookstore in his early 20s. His faith remained unwavering throughout his life and provided him a peaceful and accepting transition from his earthly life to meeting his God face to face.
Tom cherished the time he spent with his family and friends and he made sure everyone felt welcome in his house. He enjoyed traveling, wine tours, spending time at the cottage, golfing, and biking with Mary. He spent many hours in the last few weeks reminiscing about those trips and time spent together. He was a devoted father and proud grandfather and loved time spent with his children and grandchildren. He rarely missed a basketball or lacrosse game or a dance recital and was the proudest “Bop” in the stands. Tom loved the holidays, especially when the kids were all together. He had a special relationship with his father-in-law Buzz who lived with Mary and Tom since 2009, he even drove Buzz’s dog back and forth to Florida a few times for him. He had a great sense of humor, and loved laughing and making others laugh. He was an avid fisherman, loved gardening, jazz music and enjoying a cold beer in his back yard. His absence has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, and he is missed more than words could ever possibly express.
Friends and family are invited to call from 5:00 PM–7:00 PM on Friday, July 21, 2023, with a Memorial Service the next day, 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 22, 2023, all held at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. 3325 Winton Road South.
