RuthAnn Benson, 71, of Newark, passed away June 24, 2023, with family by her side. She had spent 75 days in the hospital after a heart attack with complications. She then spent 3 weeks in rehab where she passed away due to pulmonary embolism.
She is predeceased by her father, Richard Burchfield; mother, Royetta Heise; stepfather, Kenneth Kummer; and brother, Larry Burchfield. RuthAnn is survived by her daughters, Jeanne (Jaron) Chambery, Amber (Shawn) Berry and Kelli (Jeffery) Brewer; grandchildren, Sage Benson, Xyrus Valentin, Skyler Brewer, Jaron Chambery, Ethan Chambery and Sarah Berry; siblings, Patricia (Art) Weader, Betty Digby, Kay Burchfield and Terry Burchfield; 13 adopted adults with special needs; many nieces and nephews.
RuthAnn Benson was born March 27, 1952 to Richard and Royetta Burchfield. Together they had 6 children, including RuthAnn. At age 10 her father passed away. Shortly after, Kenneth Kummer became her step-father. She grew up in the Rochester area and graduated from Churchville-Chili High School in 1971. After high school she proudly worked at Bausch and Lomb until her third child arrived in 1985.
RuthAnn was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pumpkin Hook, NY for many years. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School. One of her favorite trips was to Camp Pioneer with other female church members.
RuthAnn’s caring and compassionate nature led her to become a Home Healths Aide in 1993, after Doug and she divorced. Working with hospice patients initially was very taxing on her loving heart. She found joy and her calling in 1998, she started working with a household that had 13 adopted children with special needs. They became family over time and she remained devoted to them, and eventually became their adopted mother in 2010.
RuthAnn was always a special caregiver, willing to drop everything to help her loved ones. She was especially joyful when she became a grandmother in 2002. After retirement she was an avid reader, reading sometimes a couple of books a week. She enjoyed talking with her children, playing and caring for her younger grandchildren, and spending quality time with her older grandchildren.
