With heavy hearts we announce that Ronald Alt passed away on Monday, December 5, 2023 at the age of 92 after a valiant bout with pneumonia. Ron was born on April 14, 1931 at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, NY .

He was an avid railfan, talented photographer and videographer and artistically skilled at freehand drawing. He enjoyed listening to music, and playing piano and organ. He served proudly in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He later joined General Dynamics and was assigned to a position in Samsun, Turkey. Upon its completion his position moved him to the facility in Rochester, NY, where he met his future wife, Mary. Their marriage spanned 56 years filled with many happy memories shared with family and friends. They enjoyed many trips to Pennsylvania and New Hampshire for annual railfests, sometimes accompanied by grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Genesee & Ontario Model N-Gineers Club where he was always eager to participate in many club events, especially when they displayed their model railroad layouts at area shopping malls, town libraries and elementary schools. Ron delighted the young children and adult visitors with his enthusiasm and his knowledge of the model railroad hobby.

His interest in photography led him to pursue videography, where at first he produced only family weddings and later for the public. He preserved many joyous memories for birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, school plays and weddings.  A lifelong Buffalo Bills fan (his hometown team), one of his most memorable was the wedding of his cousin and Bills athletic trainer in Fredonia, NY.    His professional demeanor allowed him to photograph Frank Sinatra while performing in Rochester.

Ron showed his love of family and friends by helping whenever and wherever needed. His warm smile and humble, gentlemanly manner will be missed, but never forgotten.

He was predeceased by his parents, Brig. General Walter F. Alt and Ina D. Alt & Beatrice Cuthbert; son Mark T. Alt; daughter, Denine L. Urquhart; granddaughter, Kristy Harrison; grandson, Luke Sorokti; and brother, Robert M. Alt.

Ron is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary E. Alt; daughters, Donna J. Sorokti, Debra L. Alt and Dorothea L. (Raymond) VanPraag; daughter-in-law, Jamie B. Alt; sons-in-law, Robert  Urquhart and Raymond VanPraag; grandchildren, Daniel Sorokti, Samantha, Andrew Alt; Jason (Holly) Harrison, Amber Harrison, Justin Hildebrand, Jamie (James) Hannah and Shawn Oliviera; great-grandchildren, Jacob & Ally Harrison, Kayley & Madison Oliviera and Jimmy & Juliet Hannah; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to thank all of Ron’s neighbors, friends and caregivers for their loving care and many acts of kindness.
