Athimoottil Varghese Mathew, aged 87, passed away on the 23rd of February 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Rebecca, their son, Vergis (Anuja), daughter, Elizabeth (Sundeep), and grandchildren, Anandita, Vikram, Diya, and Karthik.

Mathew, as he was known to all, was full of life and always had a smile on his face. He was born in Thalavady, Kerala, India. Mathew studied Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University in Calcutta, graduating in 1958.  He received a master’s degree from IIT Kharagpur in 1963, and a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University, Canada, in 1973.  Mathew returned to India and continued his career as an educator at the Trichur Engineering College. In 1980, Mathew immigrated, with his family, to the U.S. to work at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he remained until his retirement, at age 80. He was a lifelong educator with a passion for learning.

For decades, Mathew was an active member of the Rochester Malayalee group, the Mar Thoma church, and loved attending various Malayalee functions. His other passions included politics, gardening, and of course, the Buffalo Bills. He avidly followed U.S. politics, had very strong opinions, and loved to have active discussions with family and friends. Mathew and Rebecca created an amazing garden outside their house in Pittsford, New York. He designed, built, and tended to numerous garden beds, as well as the grounds, without any outside help, for nearly 40 years.

Mathew lived a long and productive life. He was a determined and passionate human being with strong values and a lot of positive energy. He loved and was loved by his immediate and extended family and will be deeply missed.
