Laura Lumley Davis of Henrietta peacefully on Dec. 13, 2020 at her daughter’s home, and surrounded by loving family, at age 87.

Predeceased by her father, George Lumley, her mother, Florence Lumley, sister Margaret Forbes, infant grandson Eric Berry, and loving husband Laurence Davis Jr. She is survived by her sister Eunice Arras; children Sally Berry; Laurence C. Davis III (Shelley); Nancy Kho (Andrew); grandchildren Daniel, Ryan, and Katherine Berry; Zachary, Shannon, and Tristan Davis; Madeleine and Lucy Kho.

The first in her family to graduate from college, Laura attended Potsdam State Teacher’s College and then embarked as a teacher in the Rochester City School District. While in Potsdam, she met her husband Larry, a student at neighboring Clarkson University. They married in 1958, and spent 58 years together. After pausing her career to raise three kids, Laura found her way back to working in education as an admin for Brighton Central Schools. A teacher to her core, Laura instilled a lifelong love of reading in her children and grandchildren and charmed any children lucky enough to know her.

Family was first to Laura. She adored her sisters and their families, and big family picnics at Mendon Ponds, parties in each other’s backyards, or meals shared around the dinner table were some of her favorite times. Besides being a wonderful mother, sister, and aunt, Laura was a loving grandma to eight equally devoted grandchildren. Laura and Larry began taking their children to Family Camp at YMCA Camp Gorham in the Adirondacks in 1968. The annual multigeneration vacation always included hiking, boating, square dancing, Poetry Club, and lots of quality time with the grandkids.

Together with Larry, Laura created community wherever she went. They volunteered extensively in Brighton and Henrietta while they lived in each town, threw Kentucky Derby parties, hosted picnics, and organized parades and sporting events for their neighbors. One of Laura’s favorite activities was to go to the movies, then discuss over an ice cream. She saw thousands of movies and, with few exceptions, her reviews always concluded: “It was such a good movie!’’ Laura celebrated her British heritage through her love of “Brit-coms”, Yorkshire pudding, and the Queen. She delighted in John Denver’s music, especially a good John Denver singalong. Laura’s unmatched sense of humor, combined with her innate kindness, leaves her family with a legacy of love, laughter, and grace.

Due to COVID restrictions, the family will hold a private burial at White Haven Memorial Park. A celebration of Laura’s life will be scheduled on a future date in 2021.
