John Henry Palomaki (1933-2024)

John Henry Palomaki passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday, April 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born and raised in Spencer, New York, with an adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors. He graduated from Rochester Business Institute, attended St. Bonaventure University, and proudly served his country in the Army in the 5th Army Headquarters. He settled in Rochester with his wife Patricia, where he worked as an accountant and entrepreneur before returning to the family farm in Van Etten, NY, in the early 1970s. He then retired to Pittsford and Victor. He served his communities in various roles, including Rochester Junior Chamber of Commerce, Scoutmaster in Van Etten, Victor Town Council, and Ontario County Planning Board. His love of the outdoors and concern for the environment led him to becoming a Master Gardener and being instrumental in the founding of the Victor Swap Shop, which continues to this day.

John was predeceased by his Finnish immigrant parents, William and Lempi (Erkkila) Palomaki; and his brother, T. William (Rachel) Palomaki. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Rosica Palomaki; his children, John (Lois) Palomaki, Thomas (Susan) Palomaki and Karyn Powell; his 9 grandchildren, Rachel (Simon) Hucko, Angela (Scott) Loblaw, Joseph (Kalina) Palomaki, Chelsea (Timothy) Story, Samuel Palomaki, Kenneth Powell, Sydney Powell, Owen Palomaki, and Luca Palomaki; and 5 great-grandchildren, Kate, Wyatt, Isla, TJ, and Mavis.

The family is grateful for the support of Ontario-Yates Hospice through University of Rochester Homecare, the University of Rochester Neurology Supportive & Palliative Care Service, and Rock Steady Boxing Victor.

A service commemorating his life will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Cobblestone Creek Country Club, 100 Cobble Creek Rd, Victor, NY 14564, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Honor Flight Rochester, P.O.
