Frances E (Keuker) Vedder of Victor, NY passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024 at the age of 94. She is predeceased by her devoted husband of 56 years, William H. Vedder.

She is survived by her three sons and one daughter; Peter (Mary), Gretchen (Gary) Wainwright, John (Judy) and Mark; 6 grandchildren, Alexander Gilmore, Emily, Kyle, Michael, William and Alden; 1 great-grandchild, Felix Gilmore; 1 brother, Oscar Keuker; nieces and nephews.

Frances was born on July 19, 1929, in Durban, South Africa to an American mother, Else, and a Dutch father, Franz. At the age of 7 months, the family moved to India. Frances spent her childhood moving throughout India (Bombay, Calcutta, Lahore, Murree, and Simla). During World War II, she and her family were detained by the Japanese on the island of Java. Frances and her family emigrated to NY City in November 1945.

Frances earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as a teaching certificate, in Music from the Manhattan School of Music in 1955. She married William H. Vedder on Aug 18, 1956 in Buffalo, NY. She taught music in public schools before raising their four children.

Frances was a loving mother and wife. She always put her family first and found great joy in her children’s accomplishments and academic successes. She always stressed the value of education, history in particular.

Frances maintained her love of music throughout her life and sang in local choirs in Buffalo, Elmira and finally in Rochester with the Genesee Valley Orchestra & Chorus (GVOC), where she also served as treasurer.  She was also accomplished at sewing and knitting, donating numerous knit items to charity.

Friends and family are invited to call on Monday, May 6th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services in Victor, NY (301 W. Main St).  In lieu of flowers, please donate to a child-supporting charity of your choice, or to WXXI radio (Click HERE to Donate).
