Frederick Arthur Miller Sr. was born in Batavia, New York, on April 23, 1930. His family moved to Rochester, New York, in 1939, where he graduated from Monroe High School in 1947. Fred attended the NYS Agricultural and Technical College in Alfred, graduating in 1949 with a degree in Electronics. He served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa.

Fred is pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Wilhemina Miller, his daughter, Lynn Miller, his ex-wife, Joan Albright. He is survived by his brother, Robert, his five children, Ann Anthony (Sam), Rick Miller (Katherine), Mary Grady (Tom), Amy Mohan (Peter), Jeff Miller (Susan), his fourteen grandchildren—Madeline Anthony, Ellie Anthony, Alexandra Miller, Jennifer Murdoch, Jacqueline Connolly, Michelle Grady, Dan Grady, Sarah Mohan, Kelly Mohan, Kiernan Miller, Kyle Miller, Stephen Miller, AmyLynn Miller, Richelle Miller, and six great-grandchildren.

Fred’s career began at Kodak’s Naval Ordnance in Rochester. He married Joan Albright in 1953. He and his father, Frank, a mason and carpenter, built Fred’s family’s first home in Henrietta. Fred was hired by Mallory Timer Corporation and they moved to Indianapolis until 1968. Fred took over The Electronic Hospital in Fairport, New York, in 1969 and built it into a flourishing electronic services business that broadened with the technology of the day to include cable television services.

Fred was a lifelong learner with many passions. He loved jazz music; he was the DJ on two Rochester stations in the late 1980’s, where you could hear him spin Stan Kenton and many other jazz greats on WGMC and WRUR in the morning. He became an environmental activist in the 1980s, working locally and with Sierra Club to preserve our air, water, and parks. Another passion was the support of organic food; he was a long-time member of the Genesee Food Coop and Peaceworks Organic Farm. He was an active member of Rochester’s Electric Car Club in the 1980’s, and drove a refurbished Honda Accord transformed into an electric car in the 1990’s. He was also an avid fisherman, and taught his children and grandchildren the joys of immersing oneself in nature. He taught himself to sail and loved boating. From childhood to his nineties, he loved building model airplanes. As an adult, he took flying lessons.

Fred was a friendly, gracious neighbor to many at the Fairport Baptist Assisted Living Home for the last years of his life. He’ll be remembered for his lively sense of humor, his active mind, and his love of family.

Friends and family may call FRIDAY November 1, 2024 at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. (3325 Winton Rd. S) from 2-5 PM.

In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Donation to the Sierra Club will also be appreciated. (www.act.sierraclub.org)
