Betty Claudine Dockery, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt known for her strength, wisdom, and compassionate spirit, passed away on November 21, 2024, in Rochester, New York.
Betty was born on June 25, 1935, growing up on her family farm in Ellerbe, North Carolina. Betty was the cherished daughter of James Alexander and Wyomia Elizabeth Dockery. After graduating from Ellerbe Colored High School in North Carolina, she decided to venture out, settling in Rochester, NY where she married Richard Hill (deceased) and started a family. She furthered her education at Monroe Community College in Rochester. She worked at Park Edge Supermarket and later joined the workforce as an Accounting Specialist at Lawyers Cooperative Publishing where she stayed until she retired. While working at Lawyers Cooperative, she also worked part time for many years at Sears Department Store. After fully retiring from both companies, not one to stay idle, she rejoined the workforce, working part time for Cheesy Eddies until 2013. She thoroughly enjoyed working with people and establishing lifelong friendships with whomever she met along the way.
She is survived by her children; Zina (Tony) Hill Cooper, Sabrina Hill, Alanna Jones, Roderick (Sharon) Hill, Ryan (Barbara) Hill and Marina (Michael) Berry. She was preceded in death by sons Randall and Rick Hill and sisters Pauline Dockery and Sandra Kay Kerr. She is also survived by her brothers, Louis, Wyman Jackie, Richard and Donald Dockery and sisters Carrie, Belinda Ann and Constance Dockery. She is survived by 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Betty exemplified unwavering faith and a caring nature that touched the lives of all who knew her. Her faith was of the upmost importance to her. She was a guiding light to her family and shared a close and loving bond with those she loved. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she was deeply committed to nurturing and strengthening those around her.
She was extremely giving and would not hesitate to help anyone in need. When she faced adversity, she faced it head on without hesitation. She was always there for her children and grandchildren. Her wisdom, strength and compassionate nature was evident in her everyday actions. She was known for her thoughtful and comforting advice which extended beyond family. She was an inspiration to us all, always remaining positive and caring even in the darkest of times. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those that knew and loved her. She was not only the foundation of our family but a beacon of faith and light to those she loved and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was a volunteer at the Father’s House and was active for many years in various ministries and prayer groups. She took pride in her family, her faith and the life that she built in Rochester.
Fun facts about Betty, she loved to binge watch Blue Bloods just to get a glimpse of Tom Selleck! She loved herbal tea, reading Amish Novels and gardening. Black Eyed Susans, Azaleas and Hydrangeas were her favorite flowers although she loved all flowers in general. She loved reading the Bible having read it cover to cover multiple times throughout her life. She could talk for hours about life on the farm and reminisced often about road trips to North Carolina with her energetic and restless kids in the station wagon.
She will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, hope and resilience. The pain of her death has greatly wounded and devastated our family, but we have the comfort of knowing that she is safely cradled in the arms of our Lord.
