Dr. Sigmund Sinwohn Yoon, beloved husband, father, church elder, and physician passed away on December 31st, 2024, at the age of 94.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dr. Clara Sungwon Cho, his daughters Kristine J. Yoon DDS, Julie E. Yoon MD, and his son Daniel W. Yoon MD. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Gabriel and Sydney Gosink, and Ethan Lin.
Dr Yoon was born in South Korea, in the village of Kim Je in the North Jeolla Province. Born to father Yoon Dong Suk, and mother Park Hee Doh, he was one of nine children.
He left home at the age of 14 to pursue opportunities for higher education, and surpassed his peers nationally to become accepted into the top medical school in Korea.
He received his medical degree from the Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1956. After his military service for the Republic of Korea, he immigrated to the United States where he completed his medical training in surgical pathology at Rochester General Hospital. Soon after, he met his wife and started his family in Buffalo, NY where he was a pathologist at the Erie County Medical Center for over 40 years, retiring in 2014.
His family celebrates a singular life of struggle and success in the face of all odds; the very definition of the American Dream. And as we mourn the passing of the most foundational member and bedrock of the extended family, we take comfort in knowing that he left nothing in his life unfinished. He will always be guiding us.
After a small private ceremony on Monday, January 6, he will be laid to eternal rest at Elmlawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family asks that you take a moment to verbally express words of sincere kindness and gratitude to the person or people you love. These words are priceless!
