Dekin, Virginia “Ginny”
July 24, 1929 – April 29, 2025
Rochester, NY. Ginny was born in Bremen, NY, and graduated from Lowville Academy and SUNY Brockport. She taught physical education in Utica and Rush-Henrietta, NY a total of 33 years and upon retirement volunteered at Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Mary Cariola Children’s Center, Kirkhaven Nursing Home and Rochester Oasis. She was an active member of Omega, Rainbow Seniors of WNY and Rochester SAGE. Paying it forward was important to Ginny.
An avid card player, Ginny enjoyed both duplicate and party bridge, euchre-both playing (card shark) and hosting tournaments-and cribbage, which she played and taught. One of her great loves was music, all genres especially barbershop. She sang in church choirs and several choruses including Rochester Sweet Adelines, Rochester Oasis, and St John’s Meadowlarks. She loved Marty Robbins. Another of her great loves was sports, particularly the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Syracuse Orangemen. A gifted conversationalist, she knew sports inside out and had amazing recall of seasons, players and team statistics.
Ginny is predeceased by her parents Dewey and Gertrude Dekin, brother Robert Dekin (Muriel), cousins and most of her friends. A friend of Bill W, she is survived by Merf Ehman, Jane Altemose, Gail Gilman, Brion Ehman, Ethan Gilman, Mitchell Altemose Ehman and Cathy Martin and Sherlea Dony, who loved and cared for her the last eight months of her amazing life.
A loving heart for animals, Ginny adopted many dogs and cats throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ginny’s name to Pet Pride of New York (WEBSITE) or an organization of your choice.
