Monica E. (Quinlan) Marchand
April 29, 1934 – May 22, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Monica Ellen Marchand on May 22, 2025. Monica was born on April 29, 1934, and grew up in the 19th Ward, where she met her lifelong love and future husband, John (Jack) Marchand. They shared a birthday and a beautiful 66-year marriage filled with joy, laughter, and deep devotion. Their love story began on Bradburn Street and remained strong for a lifetime.
Monica attended elementary school at St. Monica’s, Nazareth Academy High school and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1954. She proudly served as the nurse manager of the first telemetry unit at Strong Memorial Hospital on 8-3400. Her dedication to others touched many lives. She was a force to be reckoned with in the most positive way: a teacher, a counselor, an advocate for those less fortunate.
She was a faithful parishioner of Guardian Angels Church and attended daily Mass until she lost her mobility. Monica’s home had an open-door policy. Her hospitality defined her character exemplified by sharing her home. She participated as a host to children in the Fresh Air Program. Monica had a way of making guests and strangers feel welcome.
Buck Lake was their home where she and Jack spent their summer. Swimming, boating, fishing and floating was the mantra of the times spent there.
Monica’s hobbies brought her great joy—playing cribbage, knitting, crocheting, gardening, reading, traveling with Jack, and sipping her black coffee. She was a dedicated Buffalo Bills fan, never missed an NCAA basketball championship game and most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and hosting gatherings full of warmth and laughter.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Monica is predeceased by her siblings Emma Lang, William Quinlan, and James Quinlan. She is survived by her husband John, her seven children: Mary (Timothy) Attridge, John (Catherine) Marchand, Judy Couture (Martin D’Ambrosio), Margaret (John) Fiore, Joseph (Cara) Marchand, Ann VandenBerg, and the always unforgettable Barney (the big BM) Marchand (Christine Jackson), and by her brother Barney (Ann) Quinlan. Her legacy includes 32 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
The Marchand family is eternally grateful to Monica’s caregivers Vonshay, Gina, Lashawnda, Angela, Carler, Joanne, and Tiera for their gentle and loving care. Special thanks go to Mary Attridge and Ann VandenBerg for their endless devotion and selfless support.
