With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Oliver Wayne Bortle, Jr., known to everyone as Wayne, who passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2026, at the age of 82.

Wayne was fiercely devoted to his family, and his love for his children and grandchildren was immeasurable.

He was truly the best friend anyone could ever have. He was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need, and if you were lucky enough to become his friend, you had a friend for life. A proud United States Marine and Vietnam War veteran, he loved his country deeply and carried that pride and strength with him throughout his life.

He worked hard in many roles, including at Attica Prison, as a truck driver, at Kodak, and most recently as a Master Electrician. No matter where he was, he was respected for his work ethic, knowledge, and integrity.

His kindness extended beyond people — he had a deep love for animals and nature. He was always feeding the squirrels, birds, and deer outside his home. He found peace outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. One of his greatest joys was being out on the lake in his boat, fishing with his father, his children, and his friends.

He lived life exactly the way he wanted — with a sharp wit and unforgettable sense of humor.

Wayne is lovingly survived by his sons, Joseph (Beth), Wayne (Stacey); his daughters, Cheryl (Sean),Amy Jo (Marty), Kim;  his sisters Carol (Jared), Cindy, Pam; and his brother Jerry (Hafdis); his granddaughters, Katelyn, Maya, and Violet; many nieces and nephews and his close friend, Howard, who was like family to him. He is also survived by his beloved dogs, Rosie and Bo, who brought him constant companionship and comfort.

Wayne will be missed more than words can express. Our hearts are broken, but we are forever grateful for the love and friendship he gave so freely. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.

Burial with military honors will be held at Western New York National Cemetery, located at 1254 Indian Falls Rd., Corfu, New York 14036, on Tuesday, February 17, at 1:00 PM. Because of cemetery regulations, the service will be brief (approximately 20 minutes), and guests are asked to arrive promptly. Late arrivals may not be able to enter once the ceremony has begun.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), an organization dedicated to supporting America’s veterans, promoting patriotism, and providing programs for youth and future leaders. Donations may be made in his memory by visiting the VFW website at www.vfw.org and selecting the option to donate.
