Kenneth Duane Boice, age [84], passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026 in Rochester, NY.

Born on 9-14-1941 in Seattle, Washington, Ken lived a life marked by adventure, education, and service. He proudly served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia, an experience that reflected his love of language, culture, and learning. Raised mostly in Montana, he lived in Venezuela, NYC (Bronx), Minnesota, Iowa before Rochester, NY.

He went on to devote his professional life to education as a Spanish teacher with the Rochester City School District, where he spent many years helping generations of students discover both language and the wider world beyond their own experiences.

He is survived by his dear friend and companion, Grace Calloway; his sons, Chuck Boice and his partner, Marta Foster, and Don Boice and his partner, Betsy Serapilio.

He was the proud grandfather of Michael Boice of Boulder, his partner Erin Sullivan, Colorado; Katlyn (Boice) Amel and her husband, Donny Amel, of NY ; Meghan (Boice) Porter and her husband, Mike Porter, of NY; Owen Boice of DC and Zachary Boice of NY and Daughter- in- law Elizabeth (Hughes) Boice (Rochester, NY). Brothers Larry Boice (Virginia) and Don Boice (Minnesota) and Ex-wife Rose (Van Epps) Boice (Rochester, NY).

Becoming a grandfather brought him great joy, and he cherished watching his family grow across the generations.

He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn Rose Boice (Boston), his parents, Frank and Helen Boice.

Those who knew him will remember him as a teacher, joke teller, and lifelong learner whose love of language and culture shaped both his life and the lives of many of his students. His nickname, “Compost Ken,” reflected his love of the planet and was often referred to as a monk due to his commitment to minimalism and simplicity.
