Hsiu‑Chin “Chris” Van Tassell

Rochester, NY — Passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, at age 76.

Born in Taiwan, Chris carried her heritage with quiet pride throughout her life — in her values, her resilience, and the traditions she passed down to her family. She came to Rochester in 1975, where she raised her two sons, John Van Tassell and Jeff Van Tassell, with extraordinary devotion and strength.

As a single mother, Chris worked tirelessly to provide for her sons. She began her working life at Eastman Kodak, and later spent decades in local restaurants, where her unmatched work ethic became her hallmark. She worked six days a week, often returning home during her short break to cook dinner for her sons before heading back to her shift. Holidays were no exception. Through every challenge — long hours, aches and pains, and the demands of raising a family alone — she remained steadfast and determined.

Her final year reflected the same determination and spirit she carried throughout her life.

Chris is survived by her sons, John (Morgan Sewar) Van Tassell and Jeff (Tracey) Van Tassell; grandchildren Jessica (Nick) Griffin, Ian Van Tassell, Audrey Quéré, and Ella Van Tassell; great‑grandchildren Caden, Makenna, and Bodhi Griffin; and her “adopted son,” Jian Yi Lin. She was predeceased by her parents in Taiwan.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 1–3 PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 Winton Road South, Rochester, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Stroke Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 [Donate Online]

願先人引路,願家人得安。 “May the ancestors guide her path, and may her family find peace.”
