Marilyn S. Burnham (Scott)

Rochester: Passed away on July 2, 2021 at age 91. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kathy Ellen Burnham; sister, Helen Shipley. She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Doug) Hughes, Leslie (Frederick) DiMartino; grandchildren, Caroline DiMartino, Stephen Hughes (Leslie Dominguez), Michelle DiMartino and Amy Hughes; her dear cousin Jeanne M. Wiedenman, and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was a Registered Nurse for 50 years, retiring from Strong Memorial Hospital. She was a proud graduate of Cornell-New York Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her BS in Nursing in 1953. Her career took her to many different practice areas including Neonatal Intensive Care, High-Risk Obstetrics, GYN Oncology, Industrial Nursing, private-duty, summer camp nursing and as an archivist for the Rochester Nurses’ Registry. She practiced in Port Arthur, TX, Washington, DC (Georgetown University) and Rochester, NY. Marilyn believed education was an important ingredient for success in life, and continued to volunteer, fund-raise and advocate one-on-one with students and young people in all settings. She was a Girl Scout leader, raised funds for the Cornell Alumni Association with cheese sales, tutored adult learners with Literacy Volunteers, and asked every wait-staff at every restaurant she ever ate it if they were going on to college.

A long-time resident at St. Johns Meadows (SJM), she had many friends and enjoyed many activities there. In addition to being an expert seamstress (she made beautifully tailored suits for herself as a young woman and amazing clothes for her children and grandchildren), Marilyn also enjoyed knitting and crocheting large and small projects as gifts for others. She served as a volunteer Greeter at SJM, and was a proud member of the South Presbyterian Church worship community which meets there weekly.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, July 8th from 4-7 PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 Winton Road South. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 9th at 2PM in the All Seasons Chapel of White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road, Pittsford, NY.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to South Presbyterian Church, PO Box 22782, Rochester, NY 14692 (Donate Online) or the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY 14450 (Donate Online).
