In loving memory of Doris D. Maitland who passed away with family by her side on December 30, 2020 at the Friendly Home in Rochester, NY. She was 97 years old.
Words cannot express how much she is missed.
Doris was born to Blanche M. Henderson and William R. Deans on December 3, 1923 at home in Hammond, NY. She lost her father in 1929 to pneumonia which had been complicated by toxic gas exposure as a soldier during WWI. The family farm was sold after his death and the proceeds were lost due to the Great Depression. These hardships impacted the young family and shaped the way Doris lived the rest of her life. She was a frugal and strongly independent person who loved her family. She was proud of her Northern NY roots and her Scottish Heritage. She visited the area regularly throughout her life.
After high school, she went to nursing school in Watertown, NY during WWII. She completed her nursing career in 1985 when she retired from Monroe Community Hospital after 38 years. She worked the midnight shift so that she could be home during the day with her two children. Once retired, she devoted much of her time to helping care for her grandchildren. She moved from her home of many years in Charlotte to Honeoye Falls. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking (especially pies),sewing, knitting and other needle arts.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Robert M. Maitland, her brothers, Edwin R. Deans and Howard G. Deans, and her son-in-law, Richard Maitland-Moran. She was survived by her daughters, Jane A. Maitland-Moran (passed away 6/17/2021) and Mary E. (Brian) Scanlon, her grandchildren Mary Kate and Daniel P. Scanlon and several nieces and cousins.
She is interred at the Riverside Cemetery in Rochester, NY.
