Polly Scherrer Nicholson
January 23, 1929-July 26, 2022
Polly Scherrer Nicholson, 93, of Bloomfield passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 26 surrounded by her beloved children.
Many who knew Polly knew that she lived by the saying, “It is what it is.” This was her approach right up until her last breath. She was an avid gardener who found herself outside nearly everyday of her life, whether it be gardening, weeding or just sitting in the sun on her deck (or in her car if it was too cold out). Polly lived a life that was filled with love and led by her unwavering commitment to peace and justice.
Polly was born and grew up in Syracuse. She summered with her family in Skaneateles, where she met her husband, the late Richard Nicholson, while sailing on the lake. Richard and Polly married in 1952. Orr’s Island in Maine was Polly’s other love. She traveled there many times throughout her life with her sister, the late Nancy Welch, and later with her children and grandchildren.
Polly attended the Farmington Friends (Quaker) Meeting, where she began her journey of faith and her relationship with God. She served on many committees and was the biggest supporter of the choir, often sending personal requests to the director.
Polly was an avid reader, always learning about the world around her. She read books and articles to learn others’ perspectives and confirm or expand her understanding. She was passionate about sharing her newly acquired information and perspectives, relentlessly sharing articles with her children (always a mom!).
In addition to her sister and husband, Polly is predeceased by her brother, George Scherrer. She is survived by her five children, Richard Nicholson, Kerry Nicholson, Jim (Lisa) Nicholson, Carol Nicholson and Anne (John) Ceddia. She also is survived by her grandchildren, who she loved unconditionally and was a strong presence in their lives: Rachael Desmond, Kayli Nicholson, and Anthony, Isabelle and Abigail Ceddia. In addition, she is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Please join us for calling hours at Miller Funeral Home, 301 West Main Street, Victor, on Friday, Aug. 12 from 4-7 p.m. A celebration of Polly’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Farmington Friends Meeting House, 187 County Road 8, Farmington, 14425.
